On This Page

Whether you hold an Australian driver licence or an international licence, this guide explains the identification and licence requirements for driving a rental vehicle in Western Australia.

1. Driver Licence Essentials

All drivers must hold a valid, current driver licence that permits them to drive an unassisted passenger car in Western Australia. The licence must be presented in person at the time of vehicle collection.

2. Minimum Driver Age

Driver age requirements depend on the vehicle class and rental conditions. Minimum age criteria and any age-related terms will be confirmed when booking.

3. Provisional and Learner Licences

Learner permits are not accepted. Provisional (P-plate) licence acceptance varies depending on the vehicle class and rental category. Please verify with our team before booking.

4. International Driver Licences

International visitors are welcome. If your driver licence is issued overseas, it must be current and valid for driving in Australia.

5. Licence Translations and International Driving Permits

If your overseas licence is not written in English, you must present an official NAATI-certified English translation or an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your original licence.

6. Driving Legally in Western Australia (Transport WA Guidelines)

Under Department of Transport WA regulations, temporary visitors (tourists, business visitors, working holiday makers) can drive on a valid overseas licence. If you become a permanent resident of WA, you must transfer to a WA driver licence within the timeframe specified by Transport WA.

7. Additional Drivers

Only authorised drivers listed on the rental agreement are permitted to drive the vehicle. Additional drivers must present their licence and ID for verification before taking the wheel.

8. Identity Verification and Proof of Address

In addition to a valid driver licence, drivers may be asked to present a secondary form of identification, such as a passport, utility bill, or bank document verifying their address.

9. Student Driver Requirements

Students applying for student rates must present a valid Australian or international student ID alongside their driver licence at pick-up.

10. Payment Card and Security Bond Requirements

The primary driver must present a valid credit card or approved payment method in their name to cover the rental charge and any required security bond.

11. Driver Demerit Points and Licence Restrictions

Drivers must not be under a licence suspension, cancellation, or disqualification in any Australian state, territory, or overseas jurisdiction.

12. Commercial and Specialised Vehicle Requirements

Commercial vehicles, dual cabs, or multi-seat minivans may have additional driver qualification requirements depending on the vehicle specification.

13. Collecting the Vehicle at Pick-up

At pick-up, all nominated drivers must be present with their physical licence cards. Digital licences issued by Australian state governments may be accepted where verifiable.

14. Checking Driver Eligibility Before Booking

If you have any doubt about whether your licence or driver status meets eligibility criteria, reach out to Horizontal Traders prior to booking.
